EDUCATION IN HARTFORD

Hartford is unique in Europe in having over 6000 school places located in a village of fewer than 6000 inhabitants. Just as remarkably the overwhelming majority of these are taken, and most of the schools in Hartford are oversubscribed. Generally the standards provided in these schools are above average. DfES statistics show levels of achievement that are better (in some cases significantly so) than the national average, and in a survey taken in 2004 parents indicated a high degree of satisfaction with the quality of education provided by the establishments in Hartford.

Pupils are drawn from a wide range of nearby towns and villages, and a significant number make lengthy journeys to Hartford to attend establishments. One consequence of this is the volume of traffic generated on roads in the village at times corresponding to the start and end of the school day, and associated parking problems near schools. To some extent this is inevitable, although the Parish Council continues to explore ways in which the problem could be alleviated. Parents are encouraged to find ways of lessening the burden wherever possible.
